Road transport is at present the sector with the second largest energy consumption in the EU. The CO2-emissions grew with 20% between 1990 and 2000. Various measures have been tried out to curb this growth e.g. road pricing and reduced speed limits, but technological improvements of the car have received much attention as well. Significant improvements in the energy efficiency of the motor have been achieved, but strong counteracting trends have to some degree reduced the expected results, among them increased car weights, bigger engines, increases in car ownership, and more passenger miles.
