Objectives and Research Questions

  • What are the strength and relevance of various barriers for change in consumer energy behaviour within different energy regimes in Europe? How can these barriers be measured by quantitative and qualitative methods?
  • How can various groups of stakeholders be involved in the process towards more sustainable energy solutions as far as energy savings, energy efficiency and changes towards renewable energy are concerned?
    •  Do these three strategies represent alternative roads, or is it possible to recognise empirical synergies between them?
    • Is it possible to identify differences between consumer groups as far as these three strategies are concerned?
  • What are the main drivers for behaviour change related to lifestyles, consumer preferences, gender differences and willingness to pay?
  • How can these barriers be overcome by
    • technical improvements,
    • political decisions,
    • changes in the supply from energy producers,
    • activities from NGO and the civil society and
    • other campaigns directed toward individual consumers and households?
  • How can the results from this project be used to formulate recommendations to the energy sector and to political authorities on local, national and European level?
